Camp Stomping Ground

I first found out about the ‘radical empathy’ mission of Camp Stomping Ground in the spring of 2020, which timed well with a reaffirmation of putting my skills to use in creating a more open and accepting society. It just so happened that Camp Stomping Ground had recently bought an old Boy Scout summer camp 15 minutes outside of my hometown, and I had to reach out and say hi. That first conversation blossomed into a fruitful and invigorating collaboration with the camp directors, developing a vision for the future of CSG, and balancing immediate needs/opportunities with long-term goals. We kept things very flexible and open by creating a loose “vision plan” framework, collecting data, and imagining what could be.

In the spring of 2021 the camp directors were looking to build three new cabins, and the team spent many hours together designing a cabin for the camp’s future. We also worked together to reimagine a reclaimed camp building as a refuge and health lodge, which was built in the summer of 2021.

In the winter of 2021-2022 the camp team started work on renovating a 150-year-old farm house into a year-round administrative hub for the camp, with a little help planning user spaces and determining potential renovation pitfalls.
